The Invention in my Closet

This is the beginning step of my prototype for Nareya Yarn.

It’s a regular morning and Seattle’s sky is half blue, half cloudy. Optimistic Seattleites predict a sunny day, and cynical ones predict rain;  seasoned Seattleites don’t bother trying to predict at all. I’m a hybrid. I predict sunshine, and will make sure to grab my raincoat on the way out.

Beaks, or as I like to call her, Jaws, is our presently pleasant cockatoo. This pleasantness is brought on by having a hot shower and a sip of coffee with her Dad, my fiancé, as well as the cut-off crust of the PB&J sandwich I just made for our daughter. Beaks has been on a no-nuts diet for the last three months, and the small amount of peanut butter she is nibbling on is likely just the fix she’s been after.

A distant slammed door is followed by the scamper of feet & I assess for socks, shoes, & tangles. The door is quickly closed behind myself and the smaller version of me which wears teal sneakers.

In the quiet house there is a yellow bird, and a black cat… the hum of a computer, the dim morning light lies sleepy & stale on a shag cream rug. And there is an invention in my closet. A tightly knit tube of color, made with size 1 bamboo knitting needles, hand-dyed Malabrigo Yarn, the love of loops, & a callous on my left pointer finger.  It is the latest, and best, prototype for a yarn which will blow the yarn market away… once anyone knows it exists.
